speculation という語は「推測」という意味であり、事実に基づかない勝手な想像と解釈していた。イギリス人の方から、speculationはある程度は事実に基づいての判断であるとの指摘をもらった。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (1988)では、speculate は to think about or talk about a matter without having the necessary facts; makes guesses とあるが、十分なだけ事実を調べないで、ということのようだ。
