that 節は一般に情報量が高いので、傾向として it を形式主語や形式目的語にたてて、後ろに置かれる傾向があることを述べた。それは以前に「that 節の後置、倒置」という記事で語った。
これについて、Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (pp.676-679)で詳しく述べられているので紹介したい。
主語の位置に来るものを、pre-predicate that-clause と呼んでいて、後置（外置）されるものを extraposed that-clause と呼んでいる。下のような二つのパターンがある。
[A] 主語の位置にあるとき： That you don’t fit their image of a fairy princess annoys them.
[B] 外置された位置にあるとき： It annoys them that you don’t fit their image of a fairy princess.
that 節の前に the fact をつける文もある。下の文は両方ともthat 節が事実であり、一般的に受け入れられている情報であることを示している。（that 節が後ろに来ると、事実性が薄れる、まだ一般には受け入れられていない情報になる傾向がある）

そこで、次のようなことが説明されている。
（１）that 節が主語の位置に来るのは稀である[A]。後置の位置に来る方[B]が学術論文やニュースでも、10~20倍も多い。また、会話では実質的には存在しないと言ってもよい。
（２）the fact that ~ という形で主語の位置に来るのも稀である。
（３）that 節が使われるのは、その情報が事実であるという前提で話を進めるときである。
There are many players who might win the Masters, many who could. But the feeling about Faldo is that if he is at the top of his game, he should win it. That he is ranked only No 4 in the world at the moment is due to the eccentricity of the system. His first Masters win has now slipped from his ranking points. (注、the Masters とはゴルフのトーナメント試合のこと）
ここではthat 節の主語はhe となっていて、Faldoを受けている。ゴルフ界では、彼が４位であることは周知の事実である。
（４）that 節が主語に現れる文では、that 節の前にthe fact を加えることができる。そして意味的にはほとんど変わらない。
（５）その他にthat 節が主語の位置に来ることが多いのは、目的語の部分（下の文では、[ ]で示されている）が長い複雑な時である。
That the windscreen wipers started to work can properly be said [to have been caused by a set of things including the state of the wiper’s mountings and the smooth surface of the windscreen as well as the switch’s being flipped.]
（６）動詞のあとに長い句（下の文では、[ ]で示されている）が続くときは、that 節は主語の位置に置かれる。
That the restrictions are at last to be lifted in part reflects [universal acknowledgement that terror of the communications revolution has been a prime contributor to the technological backwardness of the country.]
（７）スポーツ記者たちは that 節が主語の位置にある文を書く傾向がある。また、書き手によっては、同じくthat 節が主語の位置に来るのを好む。さらに、そのときは、the fact を that 節の前につけたがる。
that 節の位置について、Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English を読むと、本当に勉強になる。授業ではこんなことまでは教える必要はないが、自分自身の知識として知っておくといいだろう。
