*I helped my brother’s homework. は好ましくない英文とされる。それは、help という動詞は目的語に「人」を表す語を取るからである。この文では、my brother’s homework は「もの」である。よって目的語の位置には来ない。この場合は、I helped my brother with his homework.のような英文にする必要がある。
相手が自明なときは、目的語を省略することがあるが、その場合でも前置詞 with は必要である。He helped with the laundry. 「彼は洗濯を手伝った」 He helped (me) with the laundry. がもの形である。
あるいは、with を用いない例もある。He helped the old lady across the street. のように使われる。
