大学受験によく出る問題として、a number of / the number of の違いを尋ねる問題がある。
We need to reduce the number of cars on this road. これは、「道路上の車の数を減らす必要がある」という意味である。定冠詞 the がつくときは、「～の数」を表す。（出典：ジーニアス英和辞典）
A number of passengers were injured in the accident. これは、たくさんの[相当数の]乗客がその事故で怪我をした」という意味である。冠詞 a がつくときは、「たくさんの～」とか「何人かの～」を表す。文脈で「たくさんの」か「何人かの」のどちらの意味になるか判断する。
さて、私は次のような文を作った。Due to a number of visitors from China and Korea to Tokyo Disneyland, native speakers of these languages are employed to be able to serve these visitors better. （中国と韓国から沢山の観光客が東京ディズニーランドを訪れるので、これらの言語の話し手がサービス向上のために雇われる）
この文を見て、ネイティブスピーカーは訂正した。下線部の部分を the number of visitors として不定冠詞から定冠詞に変えたのである。私は、a number of ~ は「沢山の」意味で、the number of ~ は「～の数」 では？と述べたが、そのネイティブによれば、visitors は from China and Korea to Tokyo Disneyland という語句で修飾されていて限定されるのだから the を使うべきであるというアドバイスだった。
結論は the number of とあっても、「沢山の～」という意味の場合があるので、注意すべきということだ。上記の文は以下のように修正をした。
Due to the number of visitors from China and Korea to Tokyo Disneyland, native speakers of these languages are employed to be able to serve these visitors better.
