tell は「～を伝える」という意味である。
tell という動詞は、「～が分かる」という意味である。I could tell by looking at you what happened. は「君を見て何が起こったか分かった」である。しかし、本来的には「～に伝える」という意味であるものが、どうしてそのような意味になったのであろうか。
それはもともとは、I could tell myself by looking at you what happened. のようにtell の目的語として myself があると考えられる。「自分自身に伝える」であるから「分かる」の意味になる。しかし、この場合のmyself は常に省略される。以下、いくつかの例文を見ていく。
There is no telling what he will do. 「彼が何をするか解からない。」
There is no telling what he will do. 「彼が何をするかわからない。」
There is no telling about the weather. 「天気のことはわからない。」
It is often hard to tell whether a child is ill.「子供が病気かどうか判断するのは難しい。」
I cannot tell the difference. 「違いが分からない。」
tell は誰々に伝えることが中心の意味である。
tell という動詞の最大の特徴は「誰々に伝える」という意味があることである。
(1) *He told that he had to leave New York soon.
(2) He told me that he had to leave New York soon.
上の文(1)は非文である。それはtell は伝達相手が必要であるのに、伝達相手が記載されていないからである。(2)のように、伝達相手me を記すことで適切な文となる。
tell が伝達相手なしで使えるのは二つのケースだけである。それは、目的語が a lie, the truth の時と上記で述べた「分かる」の意味の時だけである。下の例文を参照のこと。
You always have to tell the truth.
Don’t tell a lie any more.
We cannot tell what will happen in the future.
