There is構文

There is a pen on the table.(テーブルの上にペンがあります)という文は、thereが修飾語、isが述語動詞、a pen が主語、on the tableが修飾語句という構造をしています。

(a) There was a large audience in the auditorium.
(b) There was no doubt about it.
(c) There is no accounting for tastes.

(a) *A book is on the desk.
(b) The book is on the desk.(その本はその机の上にあります)
(c) There is a book on the desk.(机の上に本があります)

(c) There is a book on the desk.(机の上に本があります)

On the desk is a pen. On the desk is the pen. On a desk is the pen.

虚字のthere

(a) Is there any more coffee?
(b) There’s nothing wrong, is there?

(c) I don’t want there to be any trouble.
(d) There being nothing else to do, we went home.

(e) There is believed to be a murderer among us.

There is 構文には、be動詞以外にも「出現」を示す自動詞appear, arise, come, exist, follow, happen, lie, live, remain, stand等が使われます。

(a) There comes a time when you have to decide.
(b) There comes a taxi!
(c) Once there lived a king and a queen on the high mountain.
(d) There appears to be a shortage of paper.
(e) There happened to be a full moon that night.

(a) A furniture van was in the drive. →There was a furniture van in the drive.
(b) Two copies of Sue’s thesis are on my desk. →There are two copies of Sue’s thesis on my desk.
(c) *Plenty room is on the shelf. → There’s plenty room on the shelf.
(d) *Sincerity was in her voice. → There was sincerity in her voice.
(e) *Peace was in the region. → There was peace in the region.(その地域には平和があった)
(f) *An accident was in the studio. → There was an accident in the studio.(そのスタジオで事故があった)

There is a pen on the table.ならば、*A pen is on the table.
