classic と classical は似たような語である。その使い分けはどうなっているのであろうか。ネットの Cambridge Dictionary で調べてみた。それによれば、以下のようである。
“Classic” means ‘high quality.’ In particular, we use it to mean something that is valued because it has a traditional style. つまり、classic は「高い品質」を示す語である。とりわけ伝統的なスタイルを持っているので、高く評価されることを示す。以下の文がその例文になる。
(1) She was wearing a classic dark blue skirt. （彼女は伝統的な濃い青色のスカートをはいている）
(2) It’s a classic motorbike from the 1940s. （それは40年代の古いバイクだ）
“Classic” also means a perfect or most typical example of something. この語 classic は何か完璧で典型を示すこともある。次なその例文である。
(3) The show is a classic example of TV made for children. （このショーは子どもたち用に制作された完璧な典型です。）
We use “classical” to refer to the culture of the past and to art forms which belong to a long formal tradition. （classical という語は、過去の文化や長いこと由緒正しい伝統に属している芸術の様式を示している）
(4) Mozart is probably the best-known classical composer. （モーツアルトは多分最もよく知られたクラッシック音楽の作曲家である）
(5) She’s only eight years old and she has learned to dance both classical and modern ballet. （彼女はわずか８歳で、クラシックバレーとモダーンバレーの両方を学んだ）
まとめると、classic は「立派な､高品質の、典型的な」という意味が強くて、「古典的な、伝統的な」という意味は弱い。一方の、classical は伝統的な芸や技を指す語である。「古典的な、伝統的な」という意味が第一の意味になる。
classical music は日本語では「クラシック音楽」とされているが、この語は、「クラシッカル音楽」と言うべきであろう。
