Huddleston and Pullum による The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language

(1)bother, intend, plan, propose
He didn’t bother to tell us.  =  He didn’t bother telling us.
He intends to leave tomorrow. = He intends leaving tomorrow.

She attempted to walk without the stick. = She attempted walking without the stick.

He continued to see her every Sunday. = He continued seeing her every Sunday.

I began to understand how she felt. ≠ ? I began understanding how she felt. She began explaining how she felt.

* There began being some grounds for hope of an improvement.

I like to stay home at weekend.  I like staying home at weekend.

I’d like to be a politician.    I’d like being a politician. I’d like/enjoy a life of a politician.
