対比のthis とthat
this とthatが対比的に使われ、thisは「後者」、thatは「前者」という意味になりますHealth is above wealth, for this cannot give so much happiness as that.（健康は富よりも勝ります、というのは後者（これ＝富）は、前者（あれ＝健康）ほどの幸せをもたらさないからです。
Work and play are both necessary to health; this gives us rest, and that gives us energy.（仕事と遊びは共に健康に必要です；後者は我々に休息を与え、前者はエネルギーを与えます）
Dogs are more faithful animals than cats; these attach themselves to places, and those to persons.（犬は猫よりも忠実な動物です；後者は場所に愛着を感じ、前者は飼い主に愛着を感じるからです）
これから始まること、すでに終わったこと
thisはこれから始まること、thatはすでに終わったことを示します。次の例文で確認してください。

過去と現在
this とtheseは現在を含む時を示します。またthatとthoseは現在とへだたった過去を示します。
現在→this week, this month, this year, this morning, this evening, this instant
過去→that day, that time, those days
