料理の本に、You’re finished! と書いてあるので気になった。なんだか「お前はもうお仕舞いだ！」と銃を突きつけられているような気がしてしまう。
料理の本には、Mix the egg and the grated carrot together. You’re finished. とあり、「卵とニンジンを混ぜ合わせると完成です！」という意味だ。
この場合のYou are finished. は受け身ではなくて、現在完了形を示す助動詞 have の代わりに助動詞 be が使われている。いずれにしても完了時制である。ジーニアス英語辞典では、やや、略式な表現になるそうだ。つまり、You have finished! でもいいのだが、やや軽い口調にするために You are finished. という言い方がされている。
