Fox News Radio を聴いていると執拗なまでにヒラリー・クリントンの電子メール問題が取り上げられる。Fox News は共和党寄りであるが、これはやりすぎではないかと思う。
ところで、今日の話題は、クリントンの cause celebre という表現である。「人々の注目を浴びるできごと」という意味である。クリントンにすれば、大した問題でもないのに、マスコミや政敵が取り上げて繰り返し繰り返し言及しているという苛立ちを示した言葉である。次は彼女の弁明である。
Clinton defends email practices.
“I did not send classified material, and I did not receive any material that was marked or designated classified,” she said, adding she’s confident the issue will eventually be resolved.
“I regret that this has become such a cause celebre, but that does not change the facts and no matter what anybody tries to say, the facts are stubborn,” Clinton said. “What I did was legally permitted, No. 1 — first and foremost.”
フランス語から由来する語である。形容詞が名詞の後ろにある。ところで、フランス語の辞書で調べるとこの語が出てこない。ロベール仏和大辞典、クラウン仏和辞典、プティロワイヤル仏和辞典の３つも調べたが出てこない。フランス語ではすでに死語となっているが、英語では残っているのであろうか。
この語は学生が覚えても使う機会はないであろう。教養のあるアメリカ人が使う語であり、滅多に出会わない語であろう。よって上級クラスの語としておく。
