(1) Man’s first landing on the moon was a great accomplishment.
(2) Their singing nearly drove me crazy.
(3) I’m proud of my father (‘s) being a self-made man.

(4) Cf. I’m proud of being a self-made man ( = that I’m a self-made man).

(5) Do you mind my smoking?

(6) The desirability of the apartment house was increased by its being next to a park.

(7) I once heard of a pilot having a heart attack in midair.
(8) I hate anyone listening while I’m telephoning.
(9) Do you mind me smoking?
(10) Her father won’t approve of her marrying you.
(11) She complained of the room being too small ( = that the room was too small).
(12) I can’t stand things not being kept in their proper places.

My father doesn’t approve of women drinking.
Fancy him being twenty-one. I can hardly believe it.

The child suffered from the cruel teasing of her classmates.

Cf. He made a great contribution to the teaching of English in Japan.

Exchanging gifts at Christmas is an old tradition.
In spite of being a grandmother, she looks remarkably young.
Having my big brother with me gave me a sense of security.

注意

Fries (Grammar,p. 84)
