最近は和文英訳の問題を授業で出しづらい。日本語を黒板に書いて英語に訳してごらん、と言っても学生はスマホに日本語を打ち込んで､翻訳ソフトを使って､すぐに英訳を入手する。
この調子で翻訳や、音声翻訳の性能が高まると、あと50年後には通訳や翻訳はすべて機械が行うようになるだろう。それも人間よりもはるかに正確に訳すようになる。
どうなるか心配になったので、現代の翻訳ソフトの実情を知るために、ネットの次の５つの翻訳ソフトの出来映えを確かめることにした。
(1) Google 翻訳
(2) Weblio翻訳
(3) エキサイト翻訳
(4) Yahoo!翻訳
(5) Infoseek翻訳
使用する日本語は､上の文である。つまり、「この調子で翻訳や、音声翻訳の性能が高まると、あと50年後には通訳や翻訳はすべて機械が行うようになるだろう。それも人間よりもはるかに正確に訳すようになる。」という文である。
ただ、このままでは翻訳ソフトも訳しづらいだろうから、単文に変えて語句も分かりやすく直す。
「翻訳と音声の翻訳の性能がますます高まっている。この傾向が将来も続くと仮定する。５０年後には、通訳や翻訳は機械がすべて行う。人間よりもより正確である。」という風に若干日本語を直してみる。
すると以下のような訳文が得られた。
(1) Translation and voice translation performance is increasing more and more. Let’s assume that this trend will continue in the future. After 50 years, the machine will do all interpretation and translation. It is more accurate than a human being.
(2) Performance of translation and translation of the sound increases more and more. I suppose that this tendency will continue in the future. 50 years later, all the machines perform interpreter and translation. It is more correct than a human being.
(3) The performance of the translation and the translation of sound is rising increasingly. It’s supposed that this tendency will also continue in the future. A machine will do all interpretation and translation 50 years later. Than man, correcter.
(4) Performance of translation and translation of the sound increases more and more. I suppose that this tendency will continue in the future. 50 years later, all the machines perform interpreter and translation. It is more correct than a human being.

これらの翻訳だが、かなり性能が高い。日本の平均的な能力の学生が翻訳するよりもはるかに正確である。
この５つの中の翻訳では、(1) Google翻訳が一番優れている。たとえば、「音声翻訳」をvoice translation と的確に訳していること。「 機械が翻訳や通訳をすべて行う」の意味の日本語を、Google翻訳だけが、all translation and interpretation と的確に訳している。他の翻訳は、all the machines と機械の方にall をかけている。
将来の英文への翻訳の作業は今までの翻訳と様変わりである。第一段階：日本語の複文や重文を単文に直して翻訳しやすくする。第二段階：翻訳ソフトにかける。第三段階：その英文をチェックすることで、的確な英文に近づける。
同様に、英文を日本語に直すのは、今まで大学院生に下訳をお願いしていた人は、翻訳ソフトを利用することで、かなり時間の節約をすることができる。
